A short joined handwriting practice session
Practise the letter groups on the sheet, then use them in words. This sheet includes ch, sh, th, wh and ph; ai, ee, igh, oa and oo; and ing, ed, er, est and ly.
- Ask your child’s teacher which joins and letter shapes the school uses.
- Choose one group and demonstrate it slowly on a spare line.
- Copy the group a few times, then write a word that uses it.
- Circle one clear example and check letter size, spacing and the baseline.
Try this example
Try sh, then ship, then “The ship is big.” Keep a clear gap between words. Work on one join before adding more.
Do not join every letter automatically. Follow the school’s model and keep the writing readable. England’s Years 3–4 programme includes practising joins and knowing when letters are best left unjoined.
